A throw-back to the golf architecture of the 1800's is the partially blind 8th/17th hole of 149 to 184 yards, pictured above from the back bunker. The teeing area is just to the left of the tree line on the right.

Course History & Information

  • The Golfmore Hotel was closed during the Depression and re-opened in 1936 with slot machines, crap tables, and roulette...a complete casino operation. The gambling operation was stopped by the Michigan Governor in 1937 and the hotel went downhill until burned down.
  • Through multiple tee placements, the course plays to 5,882 yards with a rating of 68.6 and slope of 122.

grand_beach1smDuring the "Roaring 20's", Grand Beach was one of the premier summertime resorts on Lake Michigan. From Chicago, the Michigan Central Railroad provided daily train service to the then-famous Golfmore Hotel, Grand Beach's 27-hole golf course, and the beach-front residences and cottages. Having barely survived the Depression of the 1930's, the hotel burned down in 1939 and the owner was forced to liquidate. Two members of the Grand Beach Property Owners Association went door-to-door and were able to raise $6,000 to purchase the clubhouse, equipment, and 9 holes of the course. Unfortunately, they were unable to raise the additional $2,000 necessary to purchase a second 9 holes. The Association donated the facility to the Village of Grand Beach shortly thereafter.

ServiScape was hired by the Village in 2002 to raise the quality and playability of the course and to implement a series of course and infrastructure improvements. Although short by today's standards, the course is a real challenge and a lot of fun to play.
